Born in a Lie

I was born on May 24, 2007, in West Satbaria—a village in Shirajganj, Bangladesh. However, they made me a year younger on my birth certificate, so it says 2008 instead.

I don’t know what kind of logic made them think it would be easier for me to get a job in the future if I were officially one year younger. But whatever happens happens. Their greed for jobs is something that will never be cured.

I get startled when I think about how most of the Asian parents focus more on pushing their children toward securing jobs than on genuinely loving and caring for them. Making me one year younger was never going to do me any good—they probably knew it too. Yet, driven by a deeply internalized slave mentality, they didn’t even hesitate to begin my life with an official lie.

My parents have always been very strict about academic education, as are many Asian parents. For a long time, I was shaped by that same mindset—almost for the first fifteen years of my life. After that, my perspective began to shift, and I gradually started to think more independently.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that everything they say is a lie, and the only truth is ofreedom—to be free from this generational slavery.
